The Myth of “Plug in Extenders or Repeaters to Improve my WiFi”

"I Have a WiFi Extender, But I Still Have Bad WiFi”

The cable company told me it would work and Best Buy recommended it. They were both wrong, at EOC we will give you the right advice the first time and make sure you are happy with the results.

Your cable company installed a modem and a wireless router, but the furthest rooms in your house still can’t stream Netflix without buffering? So you did what most people would do, you bought a wireless extender?

You bought a Wifi Extender, maybe even the BEST… the problem is quite simply that WiFi extenders don't work most of the time, even the best ones.

The reason being, their entire means of functioning is flawed.

A WiFi “extender” is a piece of networking equipment that’s meant to increase wireless range. However, extenders rely on one radio to both receive and transmit information. Think of it like a walkie talkie — you can either talk or listen, but you can’t do both at the same time. Since data only has one path in or out, bandwidth is cut in half.

So What Should I Do?

Why use a WAP to create your wireless network?

Using a WAP lets you create a wireless network within your existing wired network, so you can accommodate wireless devices.

Its likely that the cable companies Modem, Router, Switch and Wireless Access Point are all built into a single device But what you need to enjoy a real network in your home is a separate Modem, router, switch and one or more Access Points throughout the house. Access points create a new network instead of repeating an existing one. Its not as simple as plugging in a WiFi extender into a wall. But its well worth the time and expense. While configuring wires and running ethernet wires through walls can be tricky for most people, EOC Audio does this kind of work all the time. You’d be surprised how quickly we can turn your existing internet issues , into a high performance network.
